Visit official siteCitizens of around 70 countries can stay in Japan for 90 days or less without a visa. Most EU, UK, US, Canadian, and Australian passport holders qualify. Check your country's status on the MOFA site.
If your country isn't on the visa-exempt list, you'll need a short-stay tourist visa. Processing typically takes 5 business days at a Japanese embassy or consulate.
While not always mandatory, travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended. Japan's healthcare is excellent — but expensive for foreign visitors without coverage.
Some border officers may ask for hotel confirmations. Having your first few nights booked is good practice even in visa-exempt entries.
You may be asked to show a return or onward ticket at immigration. Have your booking details accessible on your phone.
